In January, General Motors sent a shockwave through the Corvette community by offering for sale some of the marque’s most famous experimental, developmental, and pilot-line cars. These special Corvettes were part of the GM Heritage Collection, an assortment of significant vehicles from throughout the corporation’s 100-year history. Although GM did not offer an official explanation for the sell-off, it was believed to be part of a desperate bid to raise operating capital in the face of plummeting new-vehicle sales.Thirty-three Corvettes crossed the block at Barrett-Jackson’s annual Scottsdale event, and all of them sold. What follows is a list of some of the more interesting Vettes included on the docket. HERITAGE COLLECTION CORVETTES SOLD AT BARRETT-JACKSON SCOTTSDALE

On September of 1951, Harley Earl takes his Buick LeSabre dream car to the Watkins Glen sports car race. Earl is impressed by the small European sports cars, and decides to begin designing a new American sports car. In November of that same year, the Parts Fabrication group within GM Engineering Staff begins setting up a plastic department in Detroit.

Post World War II, senior figures at General Motors saw American GI’s returning from Europe with souvenirs: relatively lightweight, nimble two-seater sports cars. Design chief Harley Earl had a particular admiration for the Jaguar XK120, and aimed to create an all-American alternative. Although initially unsure which GM brand should market such a vehicle, he shared with Chief Engineer Ed Cole a desire to rejuvenate the image of Chevrolet, then seen as somewhat staid and unimaginative.

DETROIT- When it arrives in dealerships this fall, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is expected to be the most fuel-efficient sports car on the market.

General Motors Co. today said the highly-anticipated sports car will deliver an EPA-estimated 17 miles per gallon city and 29 mpg highway equipped with an all-new, seven-speed manual transmission. A driver-selectable “Eco” mode will be capable to deliver 30 mpg highway, officials said.

“The Corvette Stingray establishes the benchmark for modern performance cars by using technologies to deliver more performance and more miles per gallon,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette executive chief engineer. “We expect more and more performance cars will follow Corvette’s example.”

The highway is an 11 percent increase in fuel economy over the previous Corvette, while the all-new 6.2-liter LT1 V8 delivers 455-horsepower, a 6 percent increase over the previous Corvette. Chevrolet estimates the Corvette will run from 0 to 60 mph in less than four seconds.

Now, GM hasn’t confirmed any of this but the timing for the Z06’s potential reveal date sounds right; it’ll be exactly one year since the C7 Corvette Stingray was unveiled. Speculation has also been in full gear for some time regarding the next Z06’s output. Considering the new Stingray spits out 455 horsepower and the outgoing Z06 is good for just over 500 hp, don’t be surprised in the least to see the new Z06 hit 600 ponies.

New for the 2014 Corvette Stingray is an engine with horsepower officially rated at 460, 465 lb-ft Torque

Corvette Stingray’s all-new LT1 6.2L V-8 engine is SAE-certified at 460 horsepower (343 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 465 lb-ft of torque (630 Nm) at 4,600 rpm, with the available performance exhaust system.

The Stingray is SAE-certified at 455 horsepower (339 kW) and 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) with the standard exhaust system. They are the highest standard power ratings ever for the Corvette, delivered with efficiency that is expected to exceed 26 mpg on the highway.

The LT1’s performance complements the Corvette’s low mass with a tremendous feeling of power that builds as the rpm climbs. Drivers will experience more power and acceleration than ever before with the standard engine – in fact, its power and torque surpass many uplevel engines offered by competitors.

At 74 horsepower per liter, the LT1 has greater power density than the [...]

Many of you are probably wondering why you haven’t heard any news on other 2014 Corvette designs such as the classic Grand Sport, the track-ready Z06, and the supercharged ZR1. So here’s what we know: As of right now, the Stingray and Stingray Convertible are the only Corvette models that have been announced. However, we fully expect others to be revealed in time. This could perhaps be later in the 2014 model year, or it could be for the 2015 release.

Will Chevrolet keep the names such as “Grand Sport”, or will it be an entirely new name and design? Well the word isn’t out yet. Will the new models still have the V8 or will a V6 model be introduced? Unfortunately we have to wait and see. Folks want to see the specs on a supercharged 2014 Corvette ZR1! – Nobody is saying exactly WHAT’S coming, but we do know that something new [...]

After 24 hours of a record amount of caution flags, bi-polar weather, and a fiercely competitive grid, Corvette Racing just missed the podium — missing out on their 8th GTE-class win in 13 years. 22-year-old Jordan Taylor powered the No. 73 Corvette C6.R to the finish, placing fourth, while Oliver Gavin piloted the No. 74 car to a seventh place finish.

Taylor, along with teammates Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen qualified only ninth, while Gavin, Richard Westrbook and Tommy Milner qualified in eighth. The team made up a lot of ground in the morning, and persevered the entire race without any major incident, but the field — which also went on without many issues — was simply too fast this year. Porsche AG Team Manthey took the top two spots in the GTE Pro class this year, with Aston Martin Racing taking third. Corvette Racing was split by the pair of Ferraris, and placed ahead of [...]

One man is hospitalized in the accident that occurred Monday night

March 5, 2013

A man was hospitalized today after the Corvette he was driving rear-ended and became stuck beneath a box truck on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass.

The crash was reported at 11:10 p.m. Monday near Getty Center Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Firefighters pulled the Corvette from beneath the truck and took the driver, who was conscious throughout the rescue, to a hospital with non-life- threatening injuries, Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Berkery told a news photographer at the scene.

The crash shut down all but one southbound lane of the freeway, the photographer said.

Thanks to Rick McClure for the dramatic photos.

The successor to the Enzo is the fastest road car in Ferrari’s history. It could be yours for a cool $1.2 million. Wait — they’ve all been sold.

After months of “leaked” images and speculation, we can finally confirm details of the Ferrari hybrid supercar. First off, it is called LaFerrari. The name, which raised a few eyebrows at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and literally means “the Ferrari,” is meant to convey that this car represents the ultimate expression of what the Italian automaker strives to create.

The LaFerrari has done the unthinkable and made Ferrari’s 458 Italia look dated. In an instant the Enzo looks almost comical. For sure, the dust will need to settle before we compare LaFerrari to some of the automaker’s greats.

If you’re in any doubt regarding LaFerrari’s potential, this beast will accelerate to 62 mph in less than three seconds and reach 124 mph in under seven seconds. [...]
